All is Unmentionable, Up in the Air
November 21, 2014–January 18, 2015

Burnaby Art Gallery, Burnaby, Canada

Eli Bornowsky has been practicing as an artist in Vancouver over the past decade, and has accomplished an impressive and diverse body of abstract paintings. This exhibition features a number of large canvas ‘doubles’ which mirror each other with their almost-but-not-quite identical forms. A new suite of works on paper is presented, as well as a selection of works from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection. Bornowsky explores the polyrhythmic textures of landscape, Renaissance painting, the artist’s studio, colour, Abstract Expressionism, doubles, and Cubism. Accompanying this exhibition is an artist book of the same title, published by the Burnaby Art Gallery.

Born in Alberta, Canada, Eli Bornowsky received his BFA in Visual Arts from Vancouver’s Emily Carr University (2005) and his MFA from Bard College, New York (2014). In 2007, Bornowsky’s paintings were shown in the group exhibition Gasoline Rainbows at the Contemporary Art Gallery and he has exhibited solo exhibitions at Blanket Gallery in 2007, 2008 and 2011. In 2009, his work was included in the exhibition Enacting Abstraction at the Vancouver Art Gallery and in 2010, he exhibited Walking Square Cylinder Plane, a solo exhibition at the Western Front.

His critical texts have appeared in Fillip Review, C Magazine, Pyramid Power and artist catalogues. Bornowsky has curated exhibitions for the Or Gallery including Making Real (2008), After Finitude (2012), and the ongoing Clamour and Toll, a series of experimental music and performance. Bornowsky currently resides in Vancouver.
